Second Chances
We all need them and the Bible shows us that not only are they possible, the are personal, they are private, and ultimately profitable. The second chance is possible but it depends on your response.
He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper,
But he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion. (Proverbs 28:13)The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. (Pslams 51:17)
If all you’re trying to do is get rid of guilt, the second chance is not going to do you any good.
The Bible shows us examples like Pontius Pilate, Judas Iscariot and the rich young ruler. They all were aware of their mistakes, but there’s no indication they were willing to make the change of heart required to give them forgiveness and a real second chance.
On the other hand, from King David to the Apostles Thomas, James, and John—they stumbled, they blundered big time, yet their remorse penetrated to the core of their being. They confessed they did not try to dodge their guilt. They asked for forgiveness and a fresh start and got it. Second chance is possible but it depends on how you respond.
The second chance is personal.
To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. (John 10:3)
If you notice Jesus calls the sheep by name. He knows us personally. He talks to us personally. He deals with us personally. He knows exactly what we’re going through, what we’ve done, and the attitude of our heart. We are not faces in the crowd to God—we are persons. A person who he knows by name.
The second chance is private.
...and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Peter, then to the twelve. (1 Corinthians 15:4-5)
He doesn’t deal with us in some massive ceremony, he deals with us one on one. Peter violated his relationship with Jesus by violently denying any association with him, even as Jesus was being tormented by the Romans. He even did it within the hearing of Jesus. Jesus appeared after his resurrection he first went to Peter to restore that relationship. He appeared to him privately, then he went on the other apostles. Your second chance with God is a private matter between you and Him.
The second chance is profitable.
Our Times Are in His Hands
Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to gird yourself and walk wherever you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will gird you, and bring you where you do not wish to go.” Now this He said, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me!”
Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” So Peter seeing him said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?”
The wages of sin is death. That’s clearly not profitable, but when you turn from sin and embrace the Lord by putting your faith and trust in Him you move from the penalty of death to a life time position which will be profitable, brining you many untold blessings for eternity. The second chance is a hugely profitable opportunity.
It’s the resurrection of Jesus that creates the opportunity for our real second chance.
The resurrection proves that death does not have to be final. It proves that mistakes can be forgiven. It creates a substitute for us to pay the penalty for our sins. Howeverm we must accept it. It won’t be forced on us.
Those who truly accept their guilt and put their trust in Jesus to save them, are filled with hope, a new life, and total redemption. We all need a second chance and it’s available through Jesus Christ.
